In 2002, St. Martin's Press sent me to Boston to take photographs of author and surgeon Dr. Atul Gawande. These images would be used to illustrate the cover of his forthcoming paperback edition of Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science. For a few days, I followed Dr. Gawande through his rounds seeing patients with his students, and into several surgeries. In 2007, I returned to Boston to photograph him again, in a studio this time, for his recent book BETTER, which was published in 2007.

Dr. Atul Gawande practices at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard School of Public Health. He has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1998. His first book COMPLICATIONS was a finalist for the 2002 National Book Award. His recent book BETTER, was published in 2007.
